 Es ist Zeit, unsere Sonnenblumenkerne für das größte Dorffest des Jahres zu säen!

Am Wochenende vom 19.-21.August 2022 wird es in Bruetten vieles zu stauen, lachen, essen, erleben, trinken and...geben!

Viele Sonnenblumen werden die Straßen für die Party schmücken, da jeder im Dorf ein Päckchen Sonnenblumen zum Mitmachen erhalten hat.

Kunstausstellung in Brütten

Dank der Brütten Kultur Kommission durfte ich im letzten Monat meine Bilder und Holzschnitzereien ausstellen :)

Schweizer Vorlesetags

 Die Bibliothek Brütten lädt anlässlich des Schweizer Vorlesetags heute auf den Buck ein!

Von 14.00 – 14.45 Uhr werden Geschichten für Kinder ab Kindergarten bis und mit Unterstufe vorgelesen.

Beim Vorlesen unterstützen uns Schülerinnen und Schüler aus der 6. Klasse!

Die Geschichten werden "open air" rund um den Buck vorgelesen.

I have my first Swiss commission

My art sale at the local villlage Kreativ Markt went well. I was disappointed not to sell any paintings but I did sell lots of cards featuring my paintings, which is good. Oh, and the boss at the village library has asked me to create a poster for their Christmas message which is lovely. I have really enjoyed this. I will be taking it in tomorrow. I hope they like it. Here it is:

Brütten at the forefront of sustainable housing

Our little village of Brütten is at the forefront of the march to reduce global co2 emissions with the creation of the first solar powered zero emission housing complex in the world!

On November 19, 2015, around 150 guests celebrated the ‘topping out’ ceremony when the structural work and timber work truss were erected and by last summer residents were able to move into the nine family sized zero-emission flats, which are not linked to any electrical, oil or gas connections – and not even wood is allowed as fuel.

Brütten is an ideal location as it lies 640 m above sea level and is above the fog line, as well as being on the main thoroughfare between Zürich and Winterthur.

To maximize the collection of solar energy, the most efficient solar panels are utilized to line the entire facade of the building, turning the building essentially into a power plant. Energy consumption is kept to a minimum using LED lights and A+++ household appliances.

Just one hour of sunlight is apparently sufficient to provide for a whole day's energy needs. However, as Brütten averages eight hours of sunlight in summer, the excess energy can be stored in batteries for short term use of three to four days. Alternatively, the photovoltaic energy can be converted into hydrogen for long-term storage of up to 25 days (often necessary in December and January to bridge the low sunlight gap)

The building also has a built-in information system helping the residents optimize their energy usage of warm water, lighting and heating, PCs and other electrical devices.

The architecture, designed by René Schmid Architekten, is an incredible example of great design and technique. The building is not only technically efficient but also beautifully designed with warm colours and rooms allowing plenty of sunlight.

Residents are also obliged to use energy saving transportation, comprising two motor vehicles: a car which runs on bio fuel and an electrical car powered by the building's photovoltaic equipment. Biological waste from the residents is transferred to a special bio fuel converter.

This building concept is based upon the principles of “collect, accumulate, save and conscientious energy usage” without any loss of comfort. Although no advertising was made, more than 100 rental inquiries were made before the flats (consisting of 7 x 4.5, 1 x 3.5, 1 x 2.5 rooms) were completed.

The apartment rents are very reasonable - with CHF 2500 for a 4.5 room apartment, which includes energy usage based on a bonus system. Tenants are forced to live a lifestyle with a low energy footprint as they only have as much energy as the building is able to produce and store. They quite literally are the pioneers of homes of the future.

The Peace Bridge in paint!

After visiting the opening of the Peace Bridge at Brütten Primary School I decided to make a painting from the photograph I took - see below. I was quite pleased with the finished result and emailed a copy of it to Frau Thorig, the headteacher. She loved it and asked if she could print it out to put on the wall. I said not to bother I would be delighted to give her the original. So now it has taken a spot pride of place on the school wall. How lovely :)

Snowy trees

It's a little late but Happy New Year! The village has been knee deep in snow since New Year. It is the coldest I can remember since moving here. I love the snow. It is like a winter wonderland around the village right now. I have been taking lots of pictures and painting lots of snowy trees. Here is my latest effort. The cutest tree in town :)

Peace Bridge to solve conflict at Brütten Primary

On Monday we went along to the new Peace Bridge which has been lovingly constructed out of beautiful wood at the front of Brütten Primary School. I think this was one of the ideas which came from the School Council to help solve disputes and conflict between pupils. What a lovely idea! And then on Wednesday the President of the Gemeinde Association came along to visit the school and were serenaded by the children. All the flags were out around the village - what an occasion to treasure.

And lo and behold - a Christmas tree!

Well, I'll be darned! Just a fortnight ago I was chatting to a fellow choir member in Brütten Singengruppe about how lovely it would be to have a carol singing event in the village square at Advent. I said we could of course gather around the little tree which is resident in the centre of the square, under which benches nestle but it would be great if we could have a nice big Christmas tree to stand around, something which, since I have lived here, has never featured in the village.

And lo and behold, only a few days later, I spied a group of people putting lights on a beautiful new Christmas tree in the square! And last Sunday we were invited to go along and help make some decorations and decorate it. It was so enjoyable. And the Gemeinde had even provided a gorgeous, little ride for the children, powdered by a burning furnace, free of charge.

I am now starting to wonder if I can wiggle my nose and make more great things happen around me...

Almost time for Adventfenster...

I love this time of year. The anticipation - will it, won't it snow? What kind of advent calendar will we have this year (usually a lovely illustrated one - no chocs) Who will take part in the village Adventfenster event this year? Will I meet someone new on my rounds of Adventfenster?

Dorf Blitz have yet to announce the Adventfenster locations but I have word from my daughters that Brutten Bibliothek will be launching it all on December 1st with an apero from 6.30pm - or thereabouts. They usually have an activity and WunschPunsch for the kiddies and yummy gluwein for the grown ups. I think I may make the staff some mince pies. Now, where did I put that giant jar of mincemeat that the Brother-in-law sent over...

My painting is featured in a promotional campaign!

A painting that I made of Brutten Church has appeared all around the village and surrounding villages (including on street side posters!) as part of a promotional campaign for Dubendorf Gospel Choir which is holding a concert in the church on Sunday (20th)

The choir has suggested that I bring my painting along on the night of the event so they can tell everyone a little about the artist (me!) behind the picture they fell in love with. I'm also hoping to get a bunch of business cards printed this week to hopefully drum up a few little commissions :)

Hobby Market on this weekend

The FrauenVerein, a wonderful group for women in Brutten which organises all kinds of social events, is holding their annual hobby market this weekend. The setting will be the sports venue at the Primary School and lots of lovely ladies will be selling their wares between 10am and 5pm today and tomorrow. There will also be plenty of coffee and cake to keep your energy levels up while you browse a wealth of homemade fare.
